Taking the next step in the Seychelles

World Sailing and the Seychelles Yachting Association recently worked together to deliver a Level 1 Technical Course for Coaches in Mahé, a commitment made during Steering the Course in 2023.

There are currently no qualified female instructors or coaches in the Seychelles, but the nation has united behind the sport to promote female empowerment

World Sailing Coach Developer Becky Ellis led the course, from 15-21 January, where 11 sailors from across the islands came together to take the next step in their development and the growth of sailing in the Seychelles by learning practical sailing skills, water safety and boat handling, as well as developing the confidence to lead courses themselves.

Becky said, It was a great experience, after the thunder and lightning had gone. The group is fabulous; so many awesome sailors, all switched on and they all really want to give back to community and get sailing going again.”

World Sailing has used support from the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Olympic Solidarity fund to start the process of building a pathway for sailors to become qualified trainers.

This framework will support Seychellois sailors to develop, become coaches themselves, and pass on their knowledge to future generations.

It is hoped that these opportunities will encourage female sailors to become coaches and serve as role models for more and then encourage more young people from the island nation to discover the sport.
